Zipiajo clay squirrel pot

Zipiajo clay squirrel pot

$36.00

A charming squirrel pot handmade with local clay by female artisans in Zipiajo, Michoacán.

I was lucky to be able to visit the women potters last fall. They still produce ceramic pieces the same way as their pre-hispanic ancestors—local clay is dug and used, the pieces are hand built and then are fired on the ground.

Elvia is the leader of a women’s collective about 40 females strong in Michoacán. The women make ceramic pieces and also cross stitch huipils. The group is very democratic. When a piece sells, 50% goes to the maker and the other 50% goes towards the common collective. All their decisions are voted on. Plus they’re just a lovely group of women.

Squirrel pot size: 7” long x 5.5” wide x 3.75” high. Please note that the pot does not have a hole in the bottom.
