Josefina Aguilar folk art bird nahual

$66.00

Made by acclaimed Mexican folk artist, Josefina Aguilar’s studio, this colorful sculpture features a bird with a head of a traditional Oaxacan woman.

Brightly painted and expertly crafted in clay, the sculpture is also considered a nahual. In some parts of Mexico, beliefs about nahuals exist. It’s your spirit animal protector and also the animal you can shapeshift into.

Josefina Aguilar is the most famous Aguilar family member of Ocotlán de Morelos, a rural town in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. She is known for her hand sculpted and painted ceramic pieces depicting women, men, and animals in daily life in Oaxaca. Josefina has been featured in many folk art and Grand Maestros books. Blind now from diabetes, she continues to form the clay pieces while members of her family paint the fired pieces.
