Modela has collaborated with a three generation family of creative artisan beeswax candlemakers, Casa Viviana, in Oaxaca, Mexico for several years. This family workshop is a favorite. The family graciously opens their home for you to watch the laborious process of candles being made for weddings, churches or Day of the Dead. Their native language is Zapotec although they speak Spanish, as well.

The Process: a half gourd is dipped into a heated pan of beeswax to create a thin film of beeswax which are then left in the sun to bleach to white. The tapers are hand poured using this beeswax. Hand carved wooden molds are used to dip into the wax for the flowers.
