Josefina Aguilar market woman with turkey

Josefina Aguilar market woman with turkey

$44.00

Made by acclaimed Mexican folk artist, Josefina Aguilar’s studio, this colorful clay sculpture of a woman in the market with a turkey on her head. And that’s truly something you see in some of the weekly markets in Oaxaca—the woman is selling the turkey.

Brightly painted and expertly crafted in clay.

Josefina Aguilar is the most famous Aguilar family member of Ocotlán de Morelos, a rural town in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. She is known for her hand sculpted and painted ceramic pieces depicting women, men, and animals in daily life in Oaxaca. Josefina has been featured in many folk art and Grand Maestros books. Blind now from diabetes, she continues to form the clay pieces while members of her family paint the fired pieces.
