Clay incense burner
Traditionally used as an incense burner for chunks of copal, this red clay piece could also be used as a ring holder or other catch all.
The women of San Marcos Tlapazola in southern Mexico use clay from their surrounding fields to make their utilitarian, simple vessels. The vessels are made on a crude wheel with pieces of coconut shell or dried gourd to shape the clay and burnish. Finally, the clay is wood-fired.
